Student AR Reading/Goals

Students are working towards meeting 9 weeks reading goals at this time.  We have created a 26 minute block of time daily that is used for SSR - Silent Sustained Reading. Some time reading nightly at home would also be of great benefit to our students.  Please try to carve out some time for your student to read, maybe 30 minutes nightly, the gains will be evident as the year progresses.

Teachers of  SSR class have been working with students to get goals in place for this first 9 weeks.  Goals for each student are set individually based upon the reading level of the student and student input.  We are requiring students to read an approximate 50/50 split of fiction and non-fiction selections.  Students will receive a grade for this SSR time, either pass or fail.  If they meet or exceed their individual reading goal a "P" will show on the report card.  If they do not meet their goal, they will receive a "F" for SSR.

Our challenge is for students to read more than they did last year.  Pushing themselves to improve in the incredibly important skill of gleaning information and learning from what they read.  In our society of instant information, effective reading skills are crucial to be successful in today's job market or to further their education collegiately.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact the school and speak to your child's SSR teacher or if your questions are programatic in nature, Mr. Mattern can answer those questions for you.
